Waco and Woodway are cities in McLennan County, Texas. McLennan County is located in Central Texas halfway between Austin and Dallas. To the locals, Woodway seems more like a part of Waco than a city of its own. At one point, Waco was trying to annex the area of Woodway, so a group of citizens got together and created a city. The city was named by a long-time resident of the Rainbow Lake area. She named it Woodway because of the large amount of wooded areas and forests. Woodway is full of some of the Waco area’s most upscale neighborhoods and homes. These neighborhoods include Riverside, Twin Rivers, Badger Ranch, Oak Ridge, West Woodway Estates, and more. Twin Rivers is home to the Twin Rivers or “Bear Ridge” Country Club and Golf Course. This is Waco’s finest public 18-hole golf course. The club is open to members as well as public golfers to have a relaxing day or evening with a round or two of peaceful golfing. Twin Rivers also has a lake at their entrance with a fountain in the center and paths around it for walking, biking, and jogging. Badger Ranch also has a lake within the community for fishing. There are trails around this one to walk around as well. It is a great way to get out of the house and enjoy nature in the comfort of your own neighborhood. These neighborhoods are gated and secure, so residents can feel safe and sound when walking around outside and when they are asleep at night. Woodway has the Carleen Bright Arboretum with several acres of gardens, a pavilion, Whitehall Center, great for special events and weddings, a nature trail, and more. There are events held throughout the year for gardeners, families and children to enjoy. Another wonderful perk for children and their parents to take joy in is the school district. All of Woodway is served by Midway Independent School District, a highly recommended school district. It is not often that a district this size is recognized as exemplary by the Texas Education Agency, but Midway ISD is one of the exceptions.
Waco intertwines with Woodway. The city of Waco is a lot bigger, but both are right next to each other giving residents to both easy access to what each has to offer. Waco, Texas is everything rolled into one. There’s a home for every kind of person, budget, and standard of living. The neighborhoods in Waco include, but are not limited to: Landon Branch, Austin Avenue (also called Castle Heights), Downtown, Heart of Texas, Mountainview, North Waco, Timbercrest, West Waco, and Baylor. There are 24 neighborhoods listen on the Waco website. Most of the neighborhoods are split up into subdivisions creating tiny separate communities within the neighborhood. A lot of them have incredible views of Lake Waco. the lake has an area of 13.13 square miles. This is located on the westside of Waco. The neighborhoods lining this area are North Lake Waco, Cedar Ridge, Landon Ranch, Mountainview, and Parkdale Viking Hills. Waco is home to several exciting places like the Cameron Park Zoo, Hawaiian Falls, Cameron Park, Mammoth National Monument, Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum, Texas Sports Hall of Fame, Bill and Eva Williams Bear Habitat, Baylor University, the Waco Suspension Bridge, and so much more! There are lots of fun things to do in the area. The hard part is choosing what to explore first. Everyone knows Texas has great food, and Waco is no exception to that. Hole in the wall eateries serve delicious southern comfort foods. Restaurants you have never even heard of will become your new favorite place to eat. The usual fast-food chains and popular restaurants are around like: Subway, Sonic Drive-In, McDonald’s, Dairy Queen, Olive Garden Italian Restaurant, Red Lobster, BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse, and then you have your local Chinese takeout places that you can’t imagine living without. There are, of course, local upscale restaurants like Red Barn where you can enjoy fine dining close to home. Then come the shopping centers. There are so many stores to shop at in Waco you will have no clue where to begin. Richland Mall is the indoor mall that has all of your favorites like: Sears, JCPenney, Foot Locker, Victoria’s Secret, Express, Forever 21, Hot Topic, LIDS, and more. Then there’s the outdoor shopping mall on Marketplace Drive with other popular shops like: Old Navy, Kohl’s, Carter’s, Panera, PETCO, Family Christian, Zales, Marshalls, Children’s Place, Claire’s, Ulta, Best Buy, Loft, Pier 1 Imports, Rue21, and Children’s Place. These are only two shopping hubs. There are several shopping centers and stores lining the streets of Waco, providing locals with everything they could possibly need.
Waco and Woodway may not be as popular as Austin or Dallas, but they offer everything that you’re looking for. Affordable homes, prosperous neighborhoods, shopping centers, restaurants you won’t find anywhere else, and outdoor fun. All of this comes with the peace and quiet away from the buzzing and honking of overflowing cities.
